Enviro Action March Newsletter

In this issue there are links to:

  • 5 articles
  • A client success story
  • How to get an effective environmental management system
Enviro Action provides information and training for small to medium business owners and managers who are interested in sustainable business with reduced environmental impact and risk.

Between the monthly newsletters there may be special newsletters like the last one where I passed on a link to the Garnaut report on Climate change or some event that may be helpful to you. There will be notification about a series of free teleseminars that you and any of your friends are all invited to with a range of different environmental providers and exports.

Client Success Story.  Australian Bight Abalone run what must be close to the world’s most environmentally friendly aquaculture farm. They farm the abalone in special cages that act like artificial reefs and they feed the abalone on the natural algae that they grow on the cages structures. Brilliant! Low cost, Low impact, faster growth rates. They run an integrated management system including ISO 14001 environment, ISO 9001 quality, AS/NZS 4801 safety and HACCP.

Now they are also Carbon Neutral! Believe it or not these very professional operators had to cope with a vicious smear campaign by a group of “sea change” new residents in the Elliston area who wanted to move into an area, turn it into a retirement village and prevent all industry. They even had misinformed Green and Democrat politicians complaining about them in parliament.  Go figure!

Congratulations Andrew, Darren and all the crew!   I love working with energetic and highly innovative people like these guys!

This issue of communication and misunderstanding of business by some sections of the community is the subject of a session that I chaired at EcoForum on the Gold Coast last week. We had a number of international and Australian experts discussing ways to resolve the problem where well meaning people given both exaggerated and even false information can become very passionate about perceived problems.

One of the strengths of an ISO 14001 management system is that it requires the business to be aware of community concerns and to respond to them and actively communicate. We all know that while there are some businesses that do not do the right thing, the vast majority want to run a sustainable business and to behave legally. The biggest problem is lack of communication which can lead to lack of trrust. Business sometimes makes mistakes and does not know the law, many in the community do not trust business and ISO 14001 can help bridge this gap.

About Enviro Action Training and Coaching. I am an environmental biologist who has also been involved in both quality assurance and small business for 20 years. For over ten years I have been helping businesses to implement environmental management systems (EMS), many of them certified to ISO 14001 and I have developed a simple 3 step system to keep it easy for your business.

ISO 14001 in 90 days – YES you can do that with practical training and coaching.

These training courses work and are proven to work. And I wouldn’t still be providing this training if it didn’t genuinely impact on the businesses I coach.

I guarantee that if the business implements the training provided in their business you will reduce your risks and increase your efficiency and this greater efficiency will lead to increased profits.  In the unlikely event that you have a major non-conformance during your initial audit after fully internally auditing and reviewing your system, I will work with you by phone and email to resolve this non-conformance and help you to a successful certification.

Secure your place in the next course which starts on Tuesday 25th March, immediately after Easter so book in early and BEFORE Easter to secure your place.  This is the very last chance for primary producers to get FarmBis funding although NSW, Vic and ACT have missed out because the new Government canceled the program in those states retrospectively and without warning.

99% of scientists agree that man made pollution is causing dangerous global warming.  How can you look your grandchildren and children in the eye and say you love them while not changing your carbon output? There is a 99% chance you are putting the kids at risk.

Bureaucratic restrictions on resource use inhibit emerging technologies

A “Conditional Approval” system would seem to be a sensible step to allow for the development of new and emerging technologies to enable the kinds of changes we need over the next 10-20 years if we are to in any way manage the “runaway train” of global warming and its flow on implications.  Read more.....

EcoForum is just that!

It is very interesting that the organisers have managed to make this much more of an interactive forum than most conferences I have been to previously.  It allows the expert and the audience opportunities to take topics further and gain more insights.  Read more.....

Wind Farms in Japan - or really beside Japan!

Reuters reported that Japan is looking to harness wind power in a big way. I have a naughty question- Would the NIMBYs (not in my back yard) we have objecting to all developments in this country object to them offshore also? Personally I think they are very elegant and beautiful structures and have a less offensive visual impact then clearing vegetation or building houses on rugged windswept coastlines.   Read more......

Bizarre contrast – and about reptiles

This morning I flew to Brisbane then caught the train to the Gold Coast where I am attending this year’s EcoForum conference and exhibition. The conference is being held in the Conrad Jupiter Casino so it was a rather bizarre contrast walking from a serious environmental conference, through a casino with a Mexican band and dancers on stilts who were about 10ft tall!

I sat and enjoyed a wonderful soak in a spa along side exotic pools with fountains galore and a delightful small lizard (an eastern dragon) who was happily ignoring me and catching small insects.  Plus there were.. Read more...
