Hi${first_name}

You cannot be like your competitors in this day and age when the global financial scene is far from stable.

What is your business doing to improve your general sustainability and make sure you stay around and keep providing jobs.  Sustainability is about so much more than simply carbon or even the environment.  It is about being profitable and reducing all kinds of risk

There is an article below about ISO 14001 and I believe you should build a system for your business, any system and make sure that it covers your greatest risks.  Then become certified to the systems that suits you best.

Congratulations to Complete Pest Control who recieved the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22000 certificates today.  Well done Chris and the rest of the team.

If you do wonder whether I can really help your business, I am offering a very limited number of Breakthrough Blueprint Consultations each week for only $220 and you will get far more that that in value.  If you choose to go on and do more work with me the cost of the blueprint consultation will be deducted in full from you next program.  You need to sign up for this and when you do you will receive a pre-consultation questionnaire to fill in so that I can really hone in on how to help your business best and we book in an appointment.

The fishing industry has always been close to my heart.  On a purely practical level, fish is really healthy as a protein sources and also because they do not need to build strong skeletons to support themselves nor maintain their temperature, fish are very much more efficient at turning plant tissue into animal protein than any of the land based animals.

On a more personal level I am a Marine Biologist originally and my great grandfather owned fishing fleets and fish processing factories (smoke houses in that day and age), in both far north east Scotland and also Helgoland which was a British protectorate at the time.  I seem to have an inbuilt love of the sea and of fish.  One of my greatest joys is simply sitting on the seabed with scuba gear, watching the fish world get on with its business - but not in this weather.

However there are two very interesting videos that were released this week – one of from the ABC’s Landline program – Closing the Loop and another from a guy who thinks he has the answer to the seafood problems.  If you have any interest in fishing or in eating fresh local seafood they are worth watching.  I think the first one is excellent but feel the guy is a little idealistic in the second but it is worth a look or else I would not have posted it.

Here is a research article into sustainability recently released showing that Australians are not all fatigued about climate change.

Some gossip about how sustainable our government’s sustainability efforts are -rumour has it: the PM’s climate change adviser Clare Penrose has just resigned and following Garrett’s latest admission, Penny Wong said she heard about the shelving of the ETS when listening to the radio.  It would be good if sustainability initiatives’ in Government were really sustainable.

My kindest regards,

Jean

Why ISO 14001?

Why should you still consider environmental sustainability for your business now governments are flip-flopping on the issue? And if you do, why even think about ISO 14001?

I thought you many be open to hearing more about this. ISO 14001 is the ONLY internationally recognised environmental management standard

AND it is one of the three major outcomes of the Rio Earth Summit:
– ISO 14001 is the tool for business improvement
– Agenda 21 is the tool set up to help councils
– Kyoto Protocol is the tool for nations to use

Does School Solar effectiveness deserve penalty?

Would you believe that more than half of NSW public schools are being excluded from the government’s solar power rebate because they generate too much renewable energy?

Schools that have funded the installation of solar panels through cake stalls and community donations are, in many cases, earning about 10 per cent what private households can earn through the scheme.
This is complete nonsense!

If we can educate our kids in the virtues of be self reliant and reducing greenhouse emissions, that makes sense.  Instead the mindless Bureaucrats are teaching kids and their families that there is no point in trying to do the right thing because t

Business Names Go National

It has been announced that in April 2011 a new national system for business name registrations will commence. Each State of Australia has agreed to refer their business name registration powers to the Federal Government so that a uniform system can be established.

The new system will be administered by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission [ASIC] which also controls the registration of
Companies

Those businesses that have registered business names across Australia will...........

More about rubbish.

Following up on my local council’s very offhand approach to CFL globes and eWaste, I called my local Council again and finally spoke their environment officer.

Her viewpoint was that it is up to people when they buy goods to work out how they are going to dispose of them.

That is difficult for the compact fluoro light globes that the Government is mandating the use of without any warning about their disposal or any organisation set up to cope with this.  99% will end up in landfil and release their mercury to the water table.  Will this Government ever do any job properly and see the consequences sorted?

I think it is also an issue for other things like eWaste. .........

The Gulf Oil Spill and BP

Oh dear, I read a report today that during the last three years, BP has committed 829 of the 851 "wilful health and safety violations" among all the refiners cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the USA.  And they have had a series of deadly incidents and smaller ecological accidents.  This does look as though the big spill was an accident waiting to happen.   Why didn’t the regulators see this as a potential problem?........................
