Spencer Gulf
The Spencer Gulf Kingfish Farmers, together with the Seahorse Farm at Port Lincoln, have completed the work of implementing ISO 14001 as part of the National Aquaculture Project.
One or two people from each of the businesses were sent to three, two-day training courses held in Whyalla. Those involved were either middle management and very hands-on in their operations or owners of very small operations. The systems implemented were very much "bottom-up" approaches.
The first module was taught in mid May, the second at the end of June and the third in early August. All businesses were tightly staffed and at a very busy stage of their operation. No additional personnel or resources were put into this project.

Each of the three, two-day training courses were run on a morning, afternoon and evening with a very early start on the second day to allow the businesses to get their harvest done that day. The on-site visits to each farm were held in early September. Their internal audit was completed in early September and the businesses are currently involved in the external audit process to certify them to ISO 14001.
This project demonstrates that a well-planned ISO 14001 EMS can be implemented in around six months with minimal additional resources.
